Sustainable Venue Policy
As a venue owned by the same family for 160 years across 6 generations, taking care of this incredibly special place and a carefully managed stewardship of the Estate has always been an important consideration. In the 21st Century, we feel the significance of preserving, restoring, and giving this natural environment and the historic buildings in it, a new life in this fast-evolving world.
Our Vision
Located in a site of Special Scientific Interest, our vision is for Pengenna to be:
• A venue that has a positive impact on, and enhances, the natural environment, not one that harms and uses up it’s resources
• A protected haven for wildlife, birdlife and insects to flourish safe from modern farming and cultivation
• A destination for those couples looking to make more sustainable choices for their wedding that have a positive environment impact
Our Commitment
• Careful land management with 18 out of the 20 acres of grounds given over to wilding and left fallow.
• Our 40 acres of woodland are managed in a sustainable, traditionally coppiced way, by hand without the intervention of large scale machinery.
• We have planted British native wildflower species across the gardens around lawned areas, and the wider grounds.
• We have successfully introduced honey bee colonies to the grounds, and have even been rewarded with new wild honey bee colonies taking up residence.
• Barn owl nesting boxes have been installed in barns not used by venue guests.
• In the main roof space of the Manor House a special bat habitat has been created with over 52 bats across 3 species (pipistrelle, long ear, and horseshoe) recorded during the last survey.
• We are committed to the creation of 10 acres of new woodland for biodiversification and carbon capture.
• We are seeking funding for river restoration along our two miles of riverbank.
Resource Impact and Management
At Pengenna Manor, we are committed to managing our resources responsibly and reducing our environmental impact through sustainable practices that protect and preserve our unique coastal surroundings.
• We encourage all our guests to think about their impact on the environment through the choices they make on resources (including their decorations and supplies).
• We work with suppliers who are all based within 30 miles of the venue.
• Our caterers not only source their ingredients within a few miles of their location, but in many cases from within their own premises where they grow or rear their own.
• Our florists work with sustainable Cornish wildflower meadows and do not import out-of-season flowers from other countries.
• We have a dedicated waste area where we separate and recycle over 75% of our waste, including composting food waste and green waste. We encourage all our guests to think about their impact on the environment through the choices they make on resources (including their decorations and supplies).

• We carefully consider if we need to print any paperwork in the office, and try to keep all internal documents in digital formats on cloud-based drives accessed via team tablets and laptops for meetings etc. All marketing material if it needs to be printed, is done so on 100% recycled papers using vegetable-based inks, and printed in Cornwall to reduce our carbon impact.
• Where building work has taken place and infrastructure improvements have been made we have sourced from within the venue as much as possible, reusing and repurposing existing materials from the 20th Century defunct farm buildings, and where new timber is required this has been sourced from our own fast growing pine plantation (with replacement trees planted), and milled at the local saw mill next to the venue.
• A big investment has been made in sewage management as we are off-grid, and our toilets are flushed with captured rainwater and the sewage is run through bio-underground filters off of the septic tank system to avoid damaging discharges.
• The gardens are also watered using the collected rain water underground system we installed 12 years ago.
• A project is currently underway to replace our existing mains electricity supply with 2 acres of solar arrays and a small-impact wind turbine, so that we can not only produce enough electricity to cover all our own needs, but to feed back into the National grid with green energy.
• All our lighting systems are LED in the house, Cowyard Barn, Stables and outdoor ceremony areas, and across the entire grounds.
• We do not accept single-use plastic and will help you find solutions that are as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible.
• We ensure that any items purchased at the bar that cannot be washed and reused, (such as takeaway cups or straws), are compostable.
• We only accept dried flowers and biodegradable confetti.
Accommodation
Accommodation is available on-site for up to 120 guests, across 2 houses and our 2 acres of camping meadows, helping to reduce travel for guests and support local tourism within the immediate community through the purchase of supplies, dining out, visiting attractions etc. We also provide local taxi information and encourage shared transport wherever possible.
We employ staff from nearby villages, work with local suppliers and businesses, and host wedding fairs, open days, and charity events that showcase Cornish talent and support the local community.
Guests are encouraged to engage with the surrounding countryside through low-impact activities such as wildlife spotting, with binoculars and wildlife books.
